Dangers of Vaccines

Dr Andrew Jones, DVM answers to some very common
Vaccine Questions

Q: Should I vaccinate my dog or cat every year?
A: No. There is absolutely no scientific justification for annual vaccination.
According to Dr Ronald D Schultz, head of pathobiology at Wisconsin
University, and the world's most eminent expert on canine and feline
immunology, "once immunity to a virus exists, it persists for years or for the
life of an animal". This fact, supported by further duration of immunity studies,
has been accepted by veterinary bodies in America and Australia. The
consensus is that, if you wish to vaccinate your dog, then he should have puppy
shots followed by one shot after six months of age, and then no further shots
are required.

Q: I thought vaccines were safe - what are the adverse effects?
A: Inflammatory ('itis') diseases in dogs and cats are becoming increasingly
common, due largely to vaccines. Vaccines contain modified live viruses;
formaldehyde (a cancer-causing preservative used to embalm corpses);
mercury and aluminium salts (both toxins); serum (blood products); and other
worrying substances. The medical and veterinary professions readily
acknowledge that both humans and animals can have allergic reactions to
serum. But add all the other components, and it's no wonder some individuals
have allergic reactions.

In addition, vaccines are often cultivated on dog and cat brains and kidneys, on
hamsters, on monkeys, and on chick embryos. If any of these animals' tissues
are inadequately removed from the vaccine, the patient can have a
hypersensitivity reaction to them. The words 'hypersensitivity', 'allergy', and
'inflammation' are interchangeable. Sometimes the hypersensitivity reaction is
so severe that the patient must be immediately injected with adrenaline or they
will die.

Because vaccines are generally injected straight into the bloodstream,
components can be carried around the body. Depending upon the animal's
genetic predisposition, the allergic reaction could manifest as inflammation of
the brain, inflammation of the digestive system, inflammation of the bones and
joints - in fact, any of the many inflammatory conditions. This is why scientists
have written and produced scientific papers that link vaccines in with brain
damage, epilepsy, behavioural problems, colitis, arthritis, thyroid disease,
heart failure, kidney failure, cancer and more.

The practice of cultivating vaccines on animal tissue has also been called into
question. The Salk Polio vaccine illustrated the dangers of this when it was
discovered that it was contaminated with a range of monkey retroviruses.
SV40, a monkey retrovirus found in the Salk vaccine, has been found at the
cancer sites of people who received this vaccine. Worryingly, it has also been
found at the cancer sites of their children. SV40 switches off the part of the
DNA that protects from cancer.

SIV, another monkey retrovirus, was also a contaminant in the Salk vaccine.
SIV and HIV are closely related viruses, and independent scientists have
traced the emergence of AIDS to mass polio vaccination in the Belgian Congo
and amongst male homosexuals in New York who were given the vaccine in
an attempt to protect against genital herpes (however strange this might
sound!).

Similarly, an avian (bird) retrovirus has been found in leukaemia patients, and
it is thought that the retrovirus came from the MMR vaccine. Distemper and
measles are virtually identical viruses, and both vaccines are cultivated on
chick embryos.

Where did parvovirus come from in the 1970s, killing thousands of dogs?
Scientists have been quoted as saying that it was a cross-species disease,
created by a vaccine manufacturer who cultivated the distemper vaccine on
cats infected with feline enteritis. The first vaccine for this new disease was a
stopgap: the feline enteritis vaccine. The disease occurred simultaneously
around the world. Naturally occurring diseases spread slowly, but vaccine
manufacturers send their products out in batches around the world, easily
creating a worldwide epidemic.

By looking at scientific data from both human and animal-based research, we
are able to say that vaccines are proven to cause inflammatory and immune-
mediated diseases. The UK vet Christopher Day observed that, where the start
date of an illness in his patients is known, around 80% of patients started to be
ill within three months of vaccination. CHC put this theory to the test by
inviting pet owners to complete a short questionnaire.

There were over 4,000 dogs in the survey. We asked, if your dog is ill, when
did he become ill in relation to the vaccine? We have been astounded by the
results so far.

91% of Ataxia cases occurred within three months of a vaccine event
81% of dogs who had tumours at their vaccine sites, first developed the
tumours within three months of being vaccinated
78.6% of dogs with encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) first developed
the condition within three months of being vaccinated
73.1% of epileptic dogs first became epileptic within three months of being
vaccinated
65.9% of dogs with colitis developed the condition within that first three
months
64.9% of dogs with behavioural problems started to be a problem within three
months of vaccination
61.5% of dogs developed liver failure within three months of being vaccinated.
The above figures were chosen at random from our findings to illustrate the
principle to you: vaccines may be protecting our dogs against viral disease,
but they are doing this at a very high price. If vaccination had no bearing on
subsequent illness, only 25% of dogs should become ill in each three-month
period.

Q: Is CHC saying that we should leave our dogs unprotected against
horrible diseases like distemper and parvovirus
?
A: No, certainly not. In fact, we would say you should not leave your dogs
unprotected. But you can minimise the risks.

Firstly, if you choose to continue vaccinating, you could have puppy shots and
possibly the first year's booster, and leave it at that. This is the advice being
given now by veterinary colleges in America.

Secondly, you could use the homoeopathic alternative instead. This has been
used by many breeders and show people for years. Reports indicate that
homoeopathically protected dogs are far healthier than vaccinated dogs. There
are several scientific studies showing that the homoeopathic alternative works.

Vaccine manufacturers are currently trying to tell us that dogs need annual
boosters against leptospirosis, which is a bacterin rather than a virus.
However, many eminent scientists say that this vaccine should actually be
withdrawn as it is not very protective, and it is the vaccine most associated
with adverse reactions. The kennel cough virus mutates (like the flu) so you
can't guarantee permanent immunity from the vaccine. However, scientific
research has shown that the homoeopathic nosode is more protective against
kennel cough than the vaccine - and it's safer.

Q: My vet tells me that you are scaremongering and that I should
continue to vaccinate every year. I don't know what to do
.
A: Vets, however well-meaning, are educated in colleges that rely upon
vaccine and pharmaceutical companies for funding in the form of sponsorship,
research grants, scholarships and bursaries. Colleges are reliant upon big
business for funding, and few people are willing to bite the hand that feeds
them. Vets' education with regard to vaccines tends to stop beyond "do it".

Our knowledge about immunity has improved greatly over the past five years.
Some of the information coming to light about vaccines will present an ethical
and economic challenge to veterinarians. But your pet deserves to come first,
over and above any such challenges. If your vet says annual vaccination is
necessary, ask him if he has heard of the research coming out of America, and
the advice that annual vaccination is unnecessary. If he has heard of this
research, he cannot dismiss your questions. If he has not heard of it, then he
lacks the knowledge to advise.

Finally, your dog looks at you with love and trust in his eyes, not at a stranger
in a white coat. It is vitally important that you do as much as you can to
understand the facts. Please don't do as I did and allow your dogs to die before
you discover the truth. I wish you and your animal friends many happy and
healthy years together.

Holistic Animal Health: Vaccinosis
Health Hazard of Routine Vaccination: placing our animals at risk
Most pet owners aren't aware of the dangers in animal vaccinations that have
been discovered in recent years. The major veterinary associations now agree
that vaccinations can trigger all sorts of maladies, from allergies to cancer -
but most pet caretakers (and many veterinarians, it seems) haven't gotten the
word. "With vaccines that are repeated year after year, the frequency and
severity of these side-effects in our pets has increased dramatically. Most of
the problems involve the immune system. After all, the immune system is what
vaccines are designed to stimulate. But they do so in a very unnatural way that
can overwhelm and confuse the immune system."

Dr. Ronald D. Schultz, Ph.D
..-
"Annual revaccination provides no benefit and may increase the risk for
adverse reactions. The percentage of vaccinated animals (those vaccinated
only as puppies) protected from clinical disease after challenge with canine
distemper virus, canine parvovirus and canine adenovirus in the study was
greater than 95%." Current and Future Canine and Feline Vaccination

Pathobiological Sciences at the School of Veterinary Medicine, UW-Madison.

Dr. Charles E Loops DVM -
"The first thing that must change with routine vaccinations is the myth that
vaccines are not harmful. Veterinarians and animal guardians have to come to
realise that they are not protecting animals from disease by annual
vaccinations, but in fact, are destroying the health and immune systems of these
same animals they love and care for Homeopathic veterinarians and other
holistic practitioners have maintained for some time that vaccinations do more
harm than they provide benefits. Vaccinations represent a major assault on the
body's immune system.... Vaccine induced chronic diseases range from life-
threatening conditions such as auto-immune crises to conditions destroying the
quality of life of an animal as in chronic skin allergies."

Dr. Dee Blanco, D.V.M -
"You take healthy animals and often very quickly after you vaccinate, you can
see simple things like itching of the skin or excessive licking of the paws,
sometimes even with no eruptions and licking of the air. We see a lot of
epilepsy/seizure, often after a rabies vaccination. Or dogs or cats can become
aggressive for several days. Frequently, you'll see urinary tract infections in
cats, often within three months after their [annual] vaccination. If you step
back, open your mind and heart, you'll start to see patterns of illness post-
vaccination."

Dr. Pat Bradley, DVM  -
"In a general and frightening context, I see the overall health and longevity of
animals deteriorating. The bodies of most animals have a tremendous capacity
to detoxify poisons, but they do have a limit. I think we often exceed that limit
and overwhelm the body's immune system function with toxins from vaccines.
The most common problems I see that are directly related to vaccines on a day
to day basis are ear or skin conditions, such as chronic discharges and itching.
I also see behavior problems such as fearfulness or aggression. Often
guardians will report that these begin shortly after vaccination and are
exacerbated with every vaccine."

Dr. Dennis Macy DVM -
"We should not allow politics and tradition or greed to enter the decision (on
frequency of vaccination). Changing vaccination schedules doesn't have to
mean less profit, but that you have more income from some clients and less
from others. Veterinarians and the industry need to have guts to be honest with
ourselves and assess the risk and not be trapped in tradition." -- Dr. Dennis
Macy in "Are We Vaccinating Too Much?" AVMA Journal, 1995

Dr. Christina Chambreau, DVM -
"Routine vaccinations are probably the worst thing that we do for our animals.
They cause all types of illnesses but not directly to where we would relate
them definitely to be caused by the vaccine. Repeating vaccinations on a
yearly basis undermines the whole energetic well-being of our animals.
Animals do not seem to be decimated by one or two vaccines when they are
young and veterinary immunologists tell us that viral vaccines need only be
given once or twice in an animal's life. First, there is no need for annual
vaccinations and, second, they definitely cause chronic disease. As a
homoeopath, it is almost impossible to cure an animal without first addressing
the problems that vaccines have caused to the animal, no matter what the
species."

The Pet Wellness has been successful in getting the Texas Department of
Health Services to propose a rule change. It will be published for public
comment in October. In the meantime, we must truly marshal our forces to
counteract what is surely to be a nasty fight. There is so much myth and
misinformation surrounding rabies in companion animals. Our laws are at
least 20 years behind our knowledge of vaccinology.  Please help  (sign the
petitions) us get wider awareness of the proposed rule change and the need for
people to speak out on the need for reform in rabies laws, starting with an
exemption for sick and senior pets.

A great number of studies have shown that when you vaccinate an animal, the
body's inflammatory cytokines not only increase dramatically, but so do the
brain's inflammatory chemicals. Many pet guardians observe changes in a pet
subsequent to the first series of animal vaccinations - lethargy, vomiting,
itching, ear or eye discharge, to name but a few. The veterinarian will reassure
you that these symptoms are normal. Sadly, for some companion animals, these
symptoms worsen and lead to death. For other pets, they lead to a lifetime of
health problems.

Vaccinations: All Veterinary Schools in North America Changing
Vaccination Protocols
Recent editions of the Senior Dogs Project's newsletter have reported on the
ever-broadening trend of eliminating vaccinations for adult dogs, except for
rabies, where required by state law. We have now had a report that all 27
veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their
protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats. Here, in a nutshell, are the new
guidelines under consideration: "Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at
6 months. If a modified live virus (MLV) vaccine is given after 6 months of
age, it produces immunity, which is good for the life of the pet (i.e., canine
distemper, parvo, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year
later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second
vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not 'boosted' nor are more
memory cells induced.

"Not only are annual boosters for parvo and distemper unnecessary, they
subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated
hemolytic anemia. There is no scientific documentation to back up label
claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines. Puppies receive antibodies
through their mothers milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks.
Puppies and kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks.
Maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%)
will be produced. Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, delay the timing of
the first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart suppress
rather than stimulate the immune system. A series of vaccinations is given
starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age. Another
vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at 1 year 4 months)
will provide lifetime immunity."

Chrissie Mason B.R.C.P., Ph.D. -
"I am becoming seriously concerned at the increase in the cases of Auto-
immune disease, and the Canine/Feline vaccination programme which I
consider to be inextricably linked. Certainly, I do not stand alone in holding
these views, as a number of Orthodox Veterinary Practitioners have expressed
their concern over the incidence of certain types of illness suddenly appearing
after a vaccination has been administered. Often these are severe skin
disorders, gastrointestinal disturbances, sickness and colitis symptoms, all of
which have been observed and recorded. A further occurrence observed by
some Veterinarians is that of a tumour or growth appearing directly on or
around the sight of the annual injection, this is particularly noticeable in the
feline world, and can take the form of fibrosarcoma. Indeed, the list of
symptoms that can be linked with the over exuberant vaccination programme
appears endless: warty growths, tumours of both malignant and benign type,
seizures, skin problems, bone and joint disorders.  In America the Veterinary
Immunologists claim that vaccinations should only be given once or twice
during an animal's life time. There is no need or evidence to prove that annual
vaccination programmes are either essential or effective. On the contrary
research suggests that no dog over the age of 7 years of age derives benefit
from the annual vaccine programme. Furthermore, those animals submitted to
the annual boosters, go on to display exacerbation of joint related ills in later
life."

Vaccines…Good Medicine or Bad Advice?

As a vet, I have extensive experience with vaccines. Animals are vaccinated
much more than people. Vaccines contain mutated bacteria, viruses, immune
irritants, foreign proteins and chemical preservatives. Injecting these toxins,
introduces them directly into the blood and lymph, bypassing the first line
defenses - skin, mucus, saliva, etc. Nowhere in nature does such an exposure
occur. How can we expect a normal immune reaction to such a supernormal
assault? Research has shown that vaccines are often immunosuppressive for
days to weeks after administration. Studies have also shown that vaccines
weaken the thyroid gland. Veterinary journals have reported on vaccine
induced cancer in cats. Medicine has no idea of the long term effects. A recent
paper by the American Animal Hospital Association has called the practice of
giving annual boosters a "tradition" without evidence to support it.

Homeopaths have referred to vaccine induced problems as "vaccinosis" for
decades. From my experience and that of others, I say without reservation that
many chronic diseases are caused by vaccinations. I often find that a health
problem began shortly after vaccination. I am certain this is no coincidence.
Fortunately, homeopathy can help. Unfortunately, vaccines are a BILLION
dollar industry and vets make a large part of their income from them. Despite
the new findings, there is no move to reduce vaccine use. Most use the excuse
that they don't want to be sued should an animal become ill. Another
rationalization is that some pets are not protected despite vaccination
therefore, it is best to vaccinate every pet to be safe. If vets knew how much
damage they were doing, I believe most would change. There is too much
power and money promoting more vaccines. Vets are inundated with sales
people, advertisements and marketing materials telling them how important
and lucrative vaccines are. One journal ad urged vets to use corona virus
vaccine because most dogs with corona virus DON'T have symptoms. Thus, it
is an insidious disease and no one knows just how many dogs are affected.
What perverse logic! Now we are supposed to immunize for germs that don't
make animals sick!

Once a company has invested millions in research, they will stop at almost
nothing to recoup their costs. Those on the other side of the fence can't
compete. All we have is experience, common sense and a desire to heal our
patients. These have not yet been enough. The tide has been turning recently.
Pet owners are taking more control. They are studying the pros and cons of
medical procedures and making educated decisions. The results are becoming
noticeable. I am seeing more pets who have not been vaccinated in recent
years. We are on the edge of a revolution. People are seeking alternatives in
all areas of medicine. What are the alternatives to vaccinations? Good health
maintenance through proper nutrition and exercise is the best protection
against ALL diseases. Homeopathy has proven effective in the prevention and
healing of a serious "infectious" diseases such as cholera and typhus. I am sure
it is just as effective in parvo and distemper.
